Ever since fancy cupcake bakeries have popped up, people have come to think of the simple cupcake as something of a professional baker's art. Not so! There are so many cupcake recipes from scratch that taste as wonderful as any you'd get in a cupcake shop and are easy to make, too.

This vanilla cupcake recipe is elegant in its simplicity. Tender and light, it is the perfect base for buttercream frosting.

My red velvet cupcakes are a favorite with kids. They love the color (sadly, only achieved with lots of food coloring) and they love decorating them, too.
