A hit at Halloween parties, this brain jello recipe will scare and delight your guests. The creepy-yet-cool gelatin brain is made with strawberry jello. Mixing in some whipped topping gives it a great opaque look and yummier flavor. It's easy to make, and you can customize the color and flavor by switching out the jello.

The recipe includes a simple set of instructions to make a jiggly, edible brain. You will need to buy a brain-shaped mold, which can be found at party stores or online. A spritz of cooking spray will ensure the brain slips right out of the mold once set up, so don't forget this step. Use a paper towel to evenly distribute the spray into all of the mold's crevices. Also, choose a dish with sides that will fit the mold and stabilize it while it sets up.

Red strawberry jello creates a pale pink brain when mixed with the whipped topping. For a more "natural-looking" brain, you can go with peach- or watermelon-flavored jello. Many people also like the look of a green brain because it's extra creepy, so use lime jello.

This brain jello requires two steps, which is a slightly different approach to making gelatin. You'll need to let the gelatin mix cool for about an hour before adding the whipped topping and filling the mold. The amount of time it needs to set up will vary. Plan on overnight at least, though it can take anywhere from four to 24 hours.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray, for greasing mold

  • 1 (3-ounce) package strawberry jello

  • 1 cup boiling water

  • 1 1/2 cups cold water

  • 2 cups frozen whipped topping, thawed

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Spray a brain jello mold or brain ice cube mold with cooking spray.

  3. Mix the gelatin and boiling water, stirring until all crystals are completely dissolved. Stir in cold water. Place mixture in the refrigerator for 1 hour— you want the jello to be thickened but not firm.

  4. Beat whipped topping into thickened jello with an electric mixer until well incorporated. Pour the mixture into the brain mold, leaving about 1 inch between the top of the jello and the top of the mold.

  5. Place brain mold in a dish with sides, such as an 8 x 8-inch dish or a pie pan, to stabilize it and return to the refrigerator. Refrigerate jello brain mold until firm, between 4 and 24 hours.

  6. Run a knife around the edges of the mold to loosen. Invert the brain mold onto a plate and serve.
