Most gingerbread house kits are just pre-baked. You still have to glue the pieces together with royal icing, prop them up so they are level, and wait for them to dry. That is the hardest part.
With this kit, all you have to do is take it out of the box, make the icing, and decorate. Easy!
Pros of the Wilton Pre-Assembled Gingerbread House Kit
- It is, hands down, the easiest way to create a gingerbread house. You get to start decorating immediately. Just unpack the edible, pre-assembled gingerbread house. Make the icing (ingredients included), and start decorating!
- Everything you need is in the kit. However, I like to choose my own candy, so if you're like me, you have to buy additional candy.
- You can make the decorations as simple or as fancy as you like. When I tested this gingerbread house, I put it on a larger base and added a lot of additional decorations to the base, like a snowman on a sleigh and coconut flaked snow. But if you want to go simple, you can just use the decorations that are included in the kit.
- The finished product looks like an authentic gingerbread house. If you don't tell, nobody will know you didn't bake it from scratch.
- The house is sturdy. It won't fall apart as you're decorating.
- The house is simple enough (i.e., no fancy turrets, chimneys or drawbridges to work around) and small enough for little hands to decorate.
- It's inexpensive. The kit retails for about $12.99.
Cons of the Wilton Pre-Assembled Gingerbread House Kit
- The house is fairly small. At 5-1/2" wide x 4-1/2" high x 5-1/2" deep, you aren't creating the Taj Mahal out of gingerbread.
On the other hand, this house is plenty big enough for children to decorate. Remember, they don't want to spend hours piping icing on the sides to simulate French country window shutters.
If you'd prefer to buy a larger pre-assembled gingerbread house kit, Magic Cabin has a pre-assembled gingerbread house kit (compare prices) that measures 9" x 10" x 8".
- It tastes awful. Actually, it tastes a lot like it looks -- like cardboard. If you really want to make a gingerbread house that tastes good and you don't want to make it from scratch, consider using a gingerbread house cake pan.
- The candy that's included isn't really anything special. You could use it, but there's so much better candy out there. Why couldn't they include red hots, starlight mints or green and red M & Ms?
- It's tough to find this kit in stores. While many craft and department stores sell pre-baked gingerbread house kits, it is hard to find pre-assembled kits. Most likely, you'll have to order one online.
