These mummy dogs—a spookier version of pigs-in-a-blanket—turn regular hot dogs into a fun, delicious treat that is easy enough for kids to help make. Hot dogs are wrapped in crescent roll dough to look like mummies, and mustard is used for the eyes, making for an adorable Halloween treat that is perfect for a party appetizer, or as a pre-trick-or-treating meal when accompanied by french fries and veggie sticks. Serve these mummy dogs with mustard and ketchup for dipping.

Ingredients

  • 1 (8-ounce) can crescent roll dough

  • 8 regular size hot dogs

  • Yellow or brown mustard, for dipping

  • Ketchup, for dipping, optional

Steps to Make It

  2. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Unwrap crescent rolls to make four rectangles. Press dough at perforations to seal.

  3. Using a pizza cutter or a knife, slice dough into thin strips, about 1/8-inch wide.

  4. Wrap crescent roll dough strips around hot dogs, overlapping a little, and leaving a space at one end for the mummy's face.

  6. Just before serving, place some mustard in a bowl. Dip a toothpick in mustard and use it to make mummy eyes on the hot dogs. Serve with bowls of ketchup and mustard.

Make Ahead

You can wrap the hot dogs with the dough ahead of time, place on a baking sheet, and store in the refrigerator until you're ready to bake.

Recipe Variations

  • Cheesy Mummies: Add a piece of American cheese, that is cut to the size of the hotdog, to the underside of the hot dogs before wrapping them in dough. You can also cut a vertical slit in the hotdogs and place pieces of cheese inside before wrapping them with crescent dough.
  • Googly Eyed Mummies: Instead of using dots of mustard, you can "glue" candy eyes to the mummies' faces using mustard or ketchup.
  • Mini Mummies: Use cocktail wieners or mini sausages (lil' smokies) in place of the full-size hot dogs.
