Healthy Recipes for Kids - Breakfast

Stephanie Gallagher
If you can get the kids off to a healthy start with breakfast, they have a better chance of eating well the rest of the day. Here are some of kids' favorite breakfast recipes:
  • Fruit Smoothies - Icy and refreshing, these smoothie recipes are as tasty as they are healthy. Kids especially like the peanut butter banana smoothies.
  • Yogurt Parfaits - Crunchy granola and juicy strawberries sit on a bed of creamy yogurt in this breakfast recipe the kids will love.
  • Oatmeal Recipes - Breakfast doen't get any healthier than oatmeal, and these oatmeal recipes are kid-friendly -- guaranteed. My favorite: Oatmeal with cinnamon chips and bananas.
  • Mini Frittatas - These bite-sized bits of heaven are a favorite with kids and adults alike.

There's no reason to sacrifice great taste for nutrition. These dinner recipes are healthy, tasty and designed with kids' palates in mind.
  • Healthy Macaroni and Cheese Recipe - The healthy part of this recipe is the addition of pureed butternut squash to the sauce. It adds a slight sweetness to this recipe.
  • Vegetarian Chili Recipe - This chili recipe is full of heart-healthy vegetables and beans. And the flavors meld together in a sweet, lightly spiced way that appeals to kids.
  • Grilled Chicken Breasts with Soy Honey Sauce - The sweet-salty combination of soy sauce and honey gives these marinated chicken breasts great flavor.
  • Salmon Patties - Healthy and inexpensive, these salmon patties are a great low-budget healthy dinner recipe.

Healthy Vegetable Recipes

It isn't hard to get kids to eat vegetables when you prepare them in tasty ways. Here are some of my favorite healthy vegetables for kids. (Yes, some of these recipes contain cheese, butter or sugar. That may not be as healthy as steaming, but it does make vegetables more palatable to children, and it's far healthier for kids to eat green beans with browned butter than French fries, isn't it?):

Healthy Dessert Recipes

Everybody has a different definition of healthy - low fat, low sugar, low carb, low calorie? When it comes to cooking for kids, my emphasis is on high nutrition. These healthy desserts not only have less fat, sugar and calories than many desserts, but they also have more vitamins, antioxidants and fiber, too. Check out:
  • Yogurt Sundaes - The waffle cone bowl, chocolate chips, fresh raspberries and drizzle of honey give these sundaes the look and taste of ice cream sundaes, but with less fat, more protein and fiber.
  • Low Fat Brownies - These start with a regular brownie mix!
  • Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies - Less fat and sugar and more fiber make these chocolate chippers a nice alternative without sacrificing flavor.
