Kentucky Hot Brown Recipe
The Kentucky hot brown is a hot turkey sandwich made famous by the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. This version of the hot brown sandwich is easy for family meals, because it's made in a casserole dish.I like to use day-old Italian bread for this hot brown recipe. The more stale the bread, the better. And while you can use deli turkey breast, you'll have the best results with leftover roast turkey breast in this hot brown recipe.
Ingredients:
- 8 thick slices day-old Italian bread
- 8 thick slices roasted turkey breast or 1 lb. sliced deli turkey breast
- 8 slices bacon
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup flour
- 3 cups milk
- 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp. freshly-ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided
Preparation:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with cooking spray.
- Toast Italian bread. Place in the bottom of the baking dish in an even layer. If slices are too big to fit in one layer, cut to fit.
- Lay turkey slices over bread.
- Fry bacon until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Set aside.
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in flour, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes.
- Slowly add milk, whisking frequently, until thickened.
- Add salt, pepper and all but 2 Tbsp. of the Parmesan cheese. Remove from heat. Pour sauce over turkey, making sure all of the bread is coated.
- Sprinkle reserved Parmesan cheese over top. Bake 10 minutes. Top with bacon. Bake another 5 minutes until bacon is crisp and sauce is bubbly.
